Well I just finished Middlesex and I’m not really surprised at how it ended. I mean I can’t believe Milton died, but it was probably for the best so that he didn’t have to see his daughter as a boy. But I really liked how Desdemona realized that Cal was Callie and had that heart to heart with him and explained how this happened, that she and Lefty were siblings. I also thought the part when she was excited that she actually was right with her spoon in guessing the sex of Callie was pretty funny. I even liked how once Tessie and Chapter Eleven left for the funeral, Cal, who was now qualified to do this since she is now a male, stood at the door to prevent Milton’s soul to come into the house, like they did back when Lefty, and when Jimmy supposedly, died.

starting to get a

little weird for me.

She is experimenting

with her best friend and

just found out

she might not be a girl.

I’m just going

to try and keep

an open mind

since this gender

problem wasn’t her fault.

I’m pretty far along in reading Middlesex. When I first started, I have to admit, I was pretty appalled with the grandparents getting married even though they were siblings. It was actually hard to read the first couple chapters because that wasn’t what “right”, but once I got further into it I started to like it. It’s different, but it is interesting hearing from someone else’s perspective, Cal/Callie, and how she/he grew up in the 60’s and 70’s in the rebellious city of Detroit while going through many changes from being a girl to eventually a man. This was such a time of change not only for the city, for her/him as well. It’s like she changed with the city. I’m real curious as to how it will end, I mean I know she turns into a man, but I just wonder when the turning point is for her and how her family reacted to her becoming a man. It’ll be interesting I’m sure.

The story of my life would probably be called Christina’s Life. It’s not very original but at least everyone would know what it is about and what to expect of it. The genre, I would have to say would be written in a novel form or maybe an epic poem (if I didn’t have to write it). There would be many characters in my life’s story. Some of them would be me as the fool and my friends that fit all of the other archetypes. There would also be, in different part of the story, sages in the form of adults like my parents, teachers, and friend’s parents that helped me think things through and helped me along my coming of age journey. There really wouldn’t be an antagonist in my journey. With my life, I never really had someone against me like in regular monomythic journeys. At points, I guess, the antagonist c0uld be my parents, sister, and friends, but not for an extensive amount of time. With my life, I’m just as my archetype says, I seek a fun life without drama and I get along with everyone. The main conflict would just be about me trying to get through life without getting involved in typical high school issues and becoming the sage myself with helping my friends resolve their issues with each other. Like I said the basic plot would just be about my life and how I’ve gone through it with really no problems, just a few friend issues here and there. It would also be mainly about my journey through life and how I’ve gotten to this point in my life now. It would also be about how I now understand more about life and really my life in general. As for a person to write it, I think I would pick Richard Adams, who wrote Watership Down. I really enjoyed that book and he was able to make a story about bunnies fun. So by having him write my life’s journey, I hope that he would be able to make my non-dramatic journey into something people would find fun and enjoy reading about it.

So far in Middlesex, the grandparents fit the Queer Theory. They were actually brother and sister and felt attracted to each other so they got married. This definately goes against the “norm” of what society has instilled in everyone. Incest, as we were taught, is a bad thing. But to these people, they felt that it was right. They grew up with each other, were always together, and they were all the other had, so it just felt like they should be together. To me, this is wrong on so many levels. But, from learning about Queer Theory and how sometimes this happens and people get these feelings that they can’t control, I can accept what these grandparents did, a little. I guess they couldn’t help their feelings and they might as well act upon those, than to leave all this tension between them. Like I said though, it is still difficult for me to accept, but I can see where they are coming from and why they did it.

In class we discussed the Queer Theory. It is about how the gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual community wants to be treated like everyone else, not looked down upon by what society has turned homosexuality into. This theory is similar to the Feminist Theory, where women sought for equality among men. The people who started the Queer Theory just wanted people to open their eyes a little more and see homosexuality from a different perspective. So far, this theory is coming along at a slow pace, but it is still opening people’s eyes.
